The major trend that has completely shifted the working industry is the shift to work from home. Many of the major publicly listed companies have been reducing their commercial office footprints as a respond to the shift in telework that they see staying in place for the foreseeable future. This is great for some employees as it reduces waste from commuting to work as the average American spends 27 full work days stuck in traffic a year.

For those that are not use to working from home, after some time it can get tiring and even unproductive if you don’t develop the proper habits for remote working. There’s several small things that you can incorporate in your work day to improve working from home to be more productive.

Establish Work Hours

Before you start your day, set a designed time that you will be spent only on work. Imagine that you still will be going to the office from 8am-5pm. Spend that same time period working as if you’re still at the office.

 

Set Boundaries

If you have a family, make sure that your spouse and kids know that working from home isn’t a vacation day. Let friends or roommates know that structure and boundaries are required to be productive when working from home.

 

Make Sure It Is Professional

What we mean by this is that there are certain things that you would not do at the work place. Take that same mind set while working from home. If you need to, ask yourself out loud before you do something, “Would I do this at the office?”

 

Create Structure

Before you go to sleep at nights, write down the tasks that you want to accomplish. It’s a good idea to write down the time estimates of how long each task will take to complete and mark it down in your calendar.

 

Set Up Breaks

Even though we all like to think that we can perform at peak levels for the entire course of the day, this is just not the case. Take short 15-minute breaks throughout the day. Catch with some colleagues to refresh yourself before you start back with work.

 

Reward Progress

As mentioned earlier that you should create a list of task you need to complete for the day. As you finish each milestone, celebrate it. Reward yourself with that cookie you’ve wanted or get yourself an extra portion on meat during your lunch break.

 

Find The Best Tools For You

Everyone is different, so it’s important to figure out which tools are best for your productivity while working from home. Maybe Emails are more productive and effective over a video chat. Analyze which works best for you and stick with it.

 

Review Your Day

At the end of each day, review which tasks you completed and which you didn’t. See what you excel at and which areas improve on. Create a plan to address these for the next day.

 

Be Clear

When working from home, it’s a little more different when communicating with colleagues. Make sure your clear in your messages, so important details don’t get lost.

 

Check-In And Schedule Meetings

If you’re a manager or team leader, create expectations that there will be time in the day set for check-ins and meetings so that your colleagues understand that there will be expectations every day.
