Aaron Eatman, the Entertainment Coordinator for Georgetown Day, drew up a schedule of entertainment to create “the biggest party of the year.” Fun and games began at 11:30 with everything from faculty book-signings to musical entertainment from Georgetown bands. Two stages on White Gravenor patio and Healy Lawn featured performances by the Georgetown Phantoms, Cabaret, Mike Pearsall, and the Moo Shoo Porkestra. The excitement on Copley Lawn included a mechanical bull, carnival games, a rock wall, boxing, a moon bounce, a dunk tank with “very recognizable faculty and students,” according to Polkow and even a gladiator joust.
Those students in between classes had the opportunity to take advantage of the fun and games. Freshman Ilana Kessler commented, “I did not know what to expect from Georgetown Day, but I went out to Red Square and felt like a kid at a carnival. It was awesome — I kept thinking, ‘Mommy, can we go to that table next?’”
The day’s schedule was also marked by the presentation of the Dr. Dorothy M. Brown Award to faculty member and Vice President of Public Affairs and Strategic Development, Dr. Daniel Porterfield. According to the e-mail sent out to the Georgetown community, “The Dr. Dorothy M. Brown Award is to be presented annually at Georgetown Day to an outstanding member of the Faculty who demonstrates a high level of commitment to the educational and extracurricular advancement of students and contributes significantly to the fulfillment of the Catholic and Jesuit mission of Georgetown University.” This is the second year that the award, named for former provost Dr. Dorothy Brown, has been given. Students were encouraged to nominate a member of the Georgetown faculty whom they considered worthy of this award. This year’s ceremony was distinguished by the presence of Brown herself to award the prize. With his wife and two daughters also present in the audience, Porterfield thanked his family, his co-workers in the Office of Public Affairs and the Georgetown student body for the honor. “Today is the day we celebrate the contributions of everyone at Georgetown,” he said.
