Senior goodbyes
by Glenn Galloway in Commentary
My graduation is approaching. I have been thinking for some time how I will put together this final commentary. I wish to end my career at The Independent on a high note.
I will try to avoid the usual senior tactic of thanking everyone I have ever met, as if this were some damned yearbook signing.
Senior goodbyes
by Francis Goh in Commentary
When I started penning this senior farewell, I wished I would never stop writing. As Romeo famously remarked, “Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night till it be morrow.” The thought of graduation evokes such strong feelings in me that reflecting on these sentiments is a pleasure in itself.

When I got back to the States from my summer in Russia, my first stop was the newspaper office. I did not go home and see my cat or my mom or my bedroom. My sister dropped me off in Lot T, and I went and got my key to Leavey 409. Priorities went out the window when I became editor of this paper.

Newton’s second law of motion dictates that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Plagued by objects clogging the chute of the trash compactor in Henle Village, the University opted to install a steel door on the chute to prevent larger objects from entering.

The end of the year has a funny way of giving you a perspective that you should have had a long time ago. Looking back, I realize that most of the time I have not been writing for this paper or passed out in one of my favorite gutters has been spent writing, directing or producing student film on this campus (that may explain the gutter thing).

I want to be just like Mike. Michael Jordan? Nah, that’s child’s play, I want to go beyond a weak fade-away jump shot and blaming teammates that I should have been smart enough not to draft in the first place. Mike Sweetney, barring divine intervention, will leave at the end of this year, and I want to be just like him not because he is flashy, or cocky, or will ever have his own line of sneakers when he reaches the NBA, but because he is the perfect student-athlete.
