A visionary holiday
by Chris Boucher in Commentary
Another Feb. 14 is almost here, and well-cut paper hearts announce the arrival of this year’s Valentine’s Day. What better way to celebrate the gruesome execution of a little-known first century saint than with candlelit dinners and Hallmark cards? Perhaps, as a great romantic once said, someone will “Choo-choo-choose” you.
Proof that God hates us
by Glenn Galloway in Commentary
Valentine’s Day is considered to be a happy event for romance and expressing intimate feelings with a loved one. Wine, flowers, chocolates and affection flow freely like a warm breeze in a cold winter. Verily, nothing warms the heart like the sight of two people cloaked in the joy of true love.

Since the days of yore, by which I mean senior year in high school, I have heard the word “diversity” thrown around. “Diversity” was a catch phrase used by every college and university I visited. I think everyone will admit that the word and the figures look impressive both on paper and PowerPoint, but how noticeable is this diversity? About Georgetown, I have heard “All the girls look alike” numerous times, as well as many analogies to The Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue.

“The Canadians. They walk among us. William Shatner, Michael J. Fox, Monty Hall, Mike Meyers, Alex Trebek. All of them Canadian. All of them here.”

Georgetown University, and the nation at large, prides itself as a place of diversity and tolerance.

Several days ago, I walked out of my room to the assortment of colorful flyers that usually wallpaper the hallway. I noticed this batch of flyers was a bit different than your average collection of senatorial speech and fraternity meeting announcements. Perhaps these flyers were different from the eclectic norm because they were all essentially the same.

Having only one semester at Georgetown under my belt, I should really start off with something positive. I love it here, I really do. It does not take long to find a little niche, and before you know it you feel like you have been here for years (except when you look at the people who have been here for years and you realize you look and act much younger than they do).
