Georgetown University has upwards of a hundred campus organizations, ranging from the fun (like club sports) to the serious (IRC). Many of these organizations have been formed in the past decade, a sign of the vibrancy of Georgetown's community. But of all these organizations, a few stand out because of their staying power. One of these groups is the campus dramatic society Mask and Bauble, which celebrates its sesquicentennial this year.

One hundred and fifty years is a long time for any group to exist, but the particular struggles Mask and Bauble faces make their accomplishment especially impressive. Georgetown, for all its charms, has never been a school that goes out of its way to support the arts. Mask and Bauble, like all arts groups on campus, has had to fight for everything. The group does not have anything resembling the state of the art facilities many other universities boast. Even the Ryan Performing Arts Center, which will contain more performance areas, is not likely to be available often for Mask and Bauble use. The situation is so bad that Mask and Bauble is unable to have a consistent location for rehearsals, and performers have to track across campus to find a room every night of practice.

Even with all these challenges, Mask and Bauble does a consistently great job, producing a handful of polished and entertaining performances every year. Picasso at the Lapin Agile is just the most recent example of the group's talent in finding and performing unique plays. The annual One Act show highlights the creativity and skill of Georgetown students in a way not otherwise available at Georgetown.
The Independent congratulates Mask and Bauble on a successful first century and a half.
