Going Green, Georgetown Style

It is not hard to see the effects of the growing awareness of the environment. For one, Whole Foods will no longer offer plastic bags in the checkout line and there were no trays at Leo's for the month of April. The effort to be green is no longer solely for tree-huggers-conserving energy and showing environmental consciousness can be great for business and in some cases an economic necessity.

For some students, gambling means nothing more than the occasional poker game or March Madness bracket. But for others, the stakes are much higher. "I gamble to make money, not for fun," says Greg*, a Georgetown senior who has asked to remain anonymous. "I see the balancing act between playing cards and everything else in my life as the same type of trade-off someone has to make between a 9 to 5 job and the rest of their life.

Georgetown students are constantly looking at what is next and how to get there. Some students rely on their grades and others network in order to secure the perfect position to start their lives in the working world. Georgetown students are competitive because of the reputation that a university such as Georgetown has, and also because of the on campus resources the university offers.

A Character Debate

With a clear and undebatable victory, Senator John McCain will run for President as the Republican nominee. On the Democratic side, however the process has been long and drawn out: a horse race between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama. Senator Clinton has been able to swing enough votes as the first female nominee for President of the United States.

A Gentle Critique of Relay

There are very few Georgetown figures and institutions that escape criticism from the student body. Among the lucky few who escape critique are JTIII, Georgetown Day and Rangila, who seem universally beloved on campus. Relay for Life, though only in its second year here at Georgetown, is becoming another sacred institution on the Hilltop, proven by the hundreds of promotional fliers alleging that "every Hoya poops, and every Hoya Relays.

Like most of my fellow Hoyas, I have had the pleasure of hosting a couple of my high school friends here. As I see them react to the place I call home, I find myself realizing new things around campus myself. Maybe during the time I've spent here I have been blinded by my Georgetown pride.

Counterpoint: Enjoy Yourself

College is meant to be the best time of your life. It's the last chance you have to enjoy yourself freely, without the specter of jobs and obligations hanging over your head. So why would I, the summer after my sophomore year, kill myself trying to get the right internship? Besides, I am fairly certain that, upon graduating from Georgetown, I'll be working more than enough.

Given that we live in the so-called information age, in which the media can constantly produce news stories and deliver them to millions of readers, it is perhaps not surprising that the media has received a lot of blame this election. Should the networks have let candidates polling extremely low and raising little money debate with the frontrunners? Have reporters been treating Hillary Clinton too harshly and Barack Obama too leniently? How long should they tell voters Clinton still has a shot? Questions like this have come up time and time again.

College is described as "The four best years of your life" for a number of reasons: the knowledge acquired, the friendships forged, the relationships established and the memories created, to name but a few. Countless high school students each year pore over rankings and guides, obsess over grades and standardized test scores and take cross-country tours of college campuses all in search of their "Dream School.

The last day of one of my classes last year turned into a life discussion. Our professor, a kook with John Lennon hair and a genuine concern for our wellbeing, posed a question: where will you be in five years? "Law school." "Med school." "In Europe." Three of my six classmates blurted out, confidently.

As a Southern girl who's never lived any farther north than D.C., I'm constantly looking for reminders of home while I'm here on the Hilltop, even going so far as to make my own sweet tea twice a week or more. However, while reading Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore, I was transported back to my childhood, no cooking necessary.

With exams approaching and stress mounting, what better way to ease your nerves than a little snack break? After all, just about every teacher I've had has emphasized the importance of "brain food." Instead of making the trip to a vending machine, why not take a few minutes to create something of your own? It will be healthier and more satisfying than anything found in a package, not to mention, easy to share with your equally stressed friends.

For me, Paris was a dream that started during a middle school field trip to the Rhode Island School of Design's art museum. For my French class, we went to see their "impressionist room"-a space about the size of a Georgetown double that sucked me in and got me hooked me on impressionism forever.

"Did you know that you could fit the entire Statue of Liberty inside the dome of the Capitol building?" This line never failed to grab the attention of the members of my Capitol tour groups, causing them to crane their necks up toward the rotunda and stare in awe.

It's the end of April. I sit through the last moments of my final Ethics lecture, bursting with excitement. I scribble notes, one eye on my watch. An open window behind me fills the room with warm sunshine and the tantalizing smell of flowers and sizzling, juicy GUGS burgers.

Teeny Weenie Police in Congo have detained thirteen suspects who have been accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises. Some say that it's a joke, but Alain Kalala says differently: "It's real. Just yesterday here, there was a man who was a victim.

In response to Independent Insights, "We're Not Joking!" (April 2008): Dear Independent Staff, As one of the co-chairs of GU Pride, I wanted to comment on your coverage of Thomas Beatie's pregnancy. First, I would very much like to commend you for your consistent use of the masculine pronouns-he, him, his-in reference to Beatie and in affirmation of his gender identity.
